Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

The Japanese Benevolent Society of California (“JBSC”) is providing this list of Frequently Asked Questions to assist families who are seeking information about the JBSC’s current licensing situation.

We already own a plot or niche. Can our loved one still be buried or inurned there?

In many cases, yes. Even though JBSC’s license status is currently being addressed, arrangements can be made so families who already own plots or niches can still use them.

Has my family lost the plots or niches they already purchased?

No. Families who have already purchased burial rights maintain their rights while JBSC addresses this licensing matter.

How will the JBSC’s license status impact my family?

There may be some delays while we work through regulatory and operational issues. We apologize for this inconvenience, and we recognize how important this matter is for many families. We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding.

What should we do if a family member has passed away?

Please contact a licensed funeral home as soon as possible and let them know your loved one has rights at our cemetery. The funeral home can help coordinate with the appropriate state authorities. This may include setting a temporary disposition location.

What documents do I need to gather to move forward with an interment or burial?

If possible, please locate:

  • your contract or deed,

  • receipts or proof of purchase, and

  • plot or niche number.

Can I purchase a new plot or niche right now?

At this time, JBSC will not be selling new plots or niches. We intend to restart selling plots and niches after JBSC’s licensing matter is resolved. Please feel free to contact us directly if you wish to discuss available options at this time. If you are interested in purchasing space, please contact us directly so we can explain the current status and available options.

Can I transfer a plot at the Japanese Cemetery?

No property transfers can be recorded at this time.

I ordered a headstone/monument. Will that be installed?

At this time, JBSC cannot allow new installations. If you contracted with a third-party vendor for a headstone or monument, please contact them directly.

What should I do if I wish to move a loved one to another cemetery?

JBSC cannot directly process a move to another cemetery at this time. You may wish to contact the California Cemetery and Funeral Bureau at (916) 574-7870.

What is JBSC doing now to address this matter?

We are actively working with professional advisors, accountants, and regulatory authorities to restore compliance and continue serving families and the community.

When will JBSC be able to sell a plot or niche, or schedule a cremation or burial for my family
member?

We are not able to provide an estimated date at this time. We will update this page with developments as they occur.
